Is Dave Trembley In Trouble After Orioles Slow Start?

Posted by jmw24 on 20th April 2010

While many people did not believe that the Orioles were playoff contenders this season, most thought they would at least be an improved team. It was believed that their young core should be one season close to competing for a playoff spot, but by the early looks of things, this does not appear to be the case. The Orioles have sputtered out of the gate, with an American League worst 2-12 record, and their early struggles have brought manager Dave Trembley’s immediate future into question. Trembley is my early pick for first manager to get fired and as of now it would be a shock if he made it to Memorial Day.

To be blunt, the Orioles should be playing better baseball. They have a lineup full of good hitters, highlighted by Matt Wieters, Nick Markakis, and Adam Jones, and a core of decent starting pitchers with Brian Matusz and Kevin Millwood. Much of their early season struggles can be blamed on their inability to hit with runners in scoring position and struggles in the bullpen, most notably Mike Gonzalez whose ERA is a shade below 20. There is enough talent on the roster to salvage the season and play competitive games into the summer, but if they do not turn it around soon, one has to wonder if Dave Trembley will be in charge.

Can McNabb elevate the Redskins to new heights

Posted by GameSetMatch on 8th April 2010

If you take a look at Donovan McNabb’s career, he seems to be a top level quarterback in the NFL. Not to knock on Jason Campbell or anything but I see McNabb helping the Redskins reach the playoffs this year. I know it is early and the season has not started but on paper the team looks strong. With the addition of Larry Johnson and Willie Parker, the running back spot looks top notch. The receivers look to be in good shape and you can never complain about their tight end core.

The one area I think needs work would be the offensive line. If they work a little harder during the off season I believe they can be at a level that can help them succeed this season. It is not always about getting new players, sometimes you just have to work with what you have and make those players better.

Report: Arenas to change to No. 6

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th March 2010

According to ESPN.com, the NBA approved Gilbert Arenas’s request to change his number from the infamous 00 to 6.

After receiving a season-ending suspension for having guns in his locker, changing his number will surely make people forget the past. Probably not, but you have to give the man credit for coming up with an idea better than storing guns in his locker.

Or maybe it’s not a better idea. Will LeBron and Arenas duke it out for the rights to big 6, or does no one actually care what number criminals wear on the back of their jerseys?

No matter what number he wears or how good he is, Arenas will be known for the number 47. AK47.

The muzzle belongs on Snyder, not Zorn

Posted by GameSetMatch on 27th October 2009

Somewhere under a big tent out in the Midwest sits a group of clowns who get together after their circus performances and make fun of the guy who has the job of the human cannonball.

That’s because no matter how horrendous one person’s job may seem to be, there is always someone else who seemingly has it far worse.
Nowadays, forlorn Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn must feel like that lonely human cannonball.
What exactly was Zorn’s job when the Redskins hosted the Eagles at FedEx Field on Monday night? It certainly wasn’t the same one that 31 other fortunate men who call themselves coaches in the National Football League have on a weekly basis.

Nationals Beat Mets on Wild Throw in Eighth Inning

Posted by GameSetMatch on 30th September 2009

Another meltdown by the New York Mets gave the Washington Nationals a rare winning streak.

With the help of two wild throws on potential double-play grounders in the eighth inning, the 103-loss Nationals scored the tiebreaking run in a 4-3 win over the Mets on Tuesday night for their second straight win.

“It was kind of embarrassing to watch that kind of play — especially at that time of the game,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “Poor, poor, poor defensive play.”

With one out and the scored tied at 3, Mike Morse walked against Nick Green (1-4) and Justin Maxwell ran for him. Cristian Guzman grounded to shortstop, but former Nationals infielder Anderson Hernandez’s toss to second was off target, allowing Maxwell to advance and Guzman reached first.

Ravens’ prolific offense a surprise

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th September 2009

Following years of a dormant attack defined by conservative game plans and traditionally meager results, the Ravens’ offense has suddenly emerged as a potent early-season juggernaut.

The undefeated Ravens (3-0) rank second in the league in total offense after three games with an average of 430.3 yards per contest, eight yards less than the New Orleans Saints.

And they’ve been perfectly balanced, ranking fifth in passing offense with an average of 273.7 yards and fifth in rushing offense with a 156.7 average.

Their latest victim was the Cleveland Browns’ shoddy defense, piling up 479 yards of total offense during a 34-3 victory Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

Redskins use 3 FGs to top Rams

Posted by GameSetMatch on 21st September 2009

It was unthinkable for the Washington Redskins to lose to the St. Louis Rams at home for the second year in a row, right?

Serenaded with boos as their long drives dissolved into field goals rather than touchdowns, the Redskins just couldn’t put away the Rams on Sunday. Washington never did reach the end zone, but scoring points three at a time was enough for a 9-7 win.

Shaun Suisham kicked field goals of 21, 28 and 23 yards as the Redskins (1-1) had four drives of more than 60 yards that faltered inside the 10. They put the game away — more or less — with a 78-yard drive that ended with a failed fourth-and-1 from the 2 with less than 2 minutes to play, leaving the Rams (0-2) with too far to go and not enough time to get there.
