It has been a busy off-season for the Washington Redskins, which is centered on the acquisition of Donovan McNabb. Some think that McNabb will lead the Redskins to new heights, but it is difficult to think this is true because he will not have too much to work with. From a coaching perspective, Mike Shanahan is at the top. The offensive line is garbage, and the wide receiving core is past their prime.

But Redskins fans are hoping that their running backs will produce. On paper, a running back trio comprised of Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, and Willie Parker looks good. But in reality, it is not. After some productive seasons, Willie Parker does not provide too much. And, injuries always come into question. With Larry Johnson, the risk has essentially no reward to lead to. He only averaged 3.3 yards per carry last year, and is absolutely a team distraction. Portis is a good player, but is coming off of a bad injury, and is aging a little bit, in terms of running-back standards.

The Redskins will certainly be a better team this year. At the very least, Donovan McNabb will provide a spark. But in reality, he has big names to hand off the ball to. That doesn’t mean those players will produce.

If you have Clinton Portis on your fantasy football team, you're probably feeling a little paranoid right now.
Portis, the Redskins, their coach and even league schedule makers all seem to be conspiring against you.
So far Portis has shuffled for a mere 61 yards a game with no TDs. His line isn't blocking for him. His coach isn't calling plays for him. And the schedule keeps serving up defensive patsies that make it hard to put him on your fantasy bench.
Even though he's averaged 1,370 yards and 10 TDs the past two years, he's been stumped against the lowly Rams and Lions the past two weeks. He's been stuffed on fourth-and-goal in both games, and last week coach Jim Zorn for some reason gave him just four carries in the first half.
Normally, you'd bench a guy after three weeks of horrid play. Yet, thanks to the schedule, you're stuck. It's tough to sit him against the next three currently winless opponents: Tampa Bay (31st against the run), Carolina (29th) or Kansas City (19th).

On his 28th birthday, Clinton Portis was trying to be low-key. No big party this year. "I'm going to mind my business," he said Tuesday as he walked off the Washington Redskins' practice field. But at the mention of the name "Riggo," Portis wasn't about to bite his tongue.

Portis kept up his running feud with Hall of Fame running back John Riggins on Tuesday. Portis, who has a chance to overtake Riggins this year as the franchise's all-time leading rusher, clearly is growing tired of being criticized by the legend he's pursuing.

"I think he was a great running back, but, you know, think of who else was around him," Portis said. "That was really not hard to be a great running back when you've got that talent all around you. I think they just had great teams, you know. I think everybody who played in that era as a running back is big around here."
