The Washington Redskins are shuffling their lineup again after losing their strong safety and right tackle to multiweek injuries.
In addition, Clinton Portis is recovering from a concussion and is doubtful to play in next week’s game against Denver.
Safety Chris Horton damaged a ligament in his left big toe during Sunday’s 31-17 loss to Atlanta. He’s out a minimum of four to six weeks — and it will be four to six months if a specialist decides the toe needs surgery.
Offensive lineman Mike Williams, who has started the last four games, is out two to four weeks after tearing a ligament in his ankle. He will also see a specialist but doesn’t expect to require surgery.
Portis took a helmet-to-helmet blow as he was tackled at the end of a running play during the first quarter on Sunday. He will undergo a test Tuesday to help determine his availability for the Broncos game.

Redskins fans got the weekend off. Mercifully, they were allowed to rake leaves, ready the garage for winter or watch more functional NFL teams compete last Sunday, which was Washington’s bye week.
What’s coming out of Ashburn, Va., these days has become almost comical. I write “almost” because I know for many loyal followers of the burgundy and gold, it’s not funny. A franchise that boasts five world titles, including three Super Bowls, and 17 Hall of Famers in its history shouldn’t be subjected to the increasingly frequent and loud calls for change.
Those calls aren’t directed at the embattled head coach, Jim Zorn, though. He seems to have earned sympathy points from many around the league, although it is quite clear that he is in over his head and needs a change of scenery. The masses are turning on the one person who can’t be fired — the owner.

The Jim Zorn era in Washington effectively came to an end on an unusually cold, windy afternoon before 12,000 empty seats and 79,000 angry, bundled-up customers. The coach hired for his offensive expertise couldn’t generate any points in the first half against a winless team at home for the second time in three weeks.
After Sunday’s 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Zorn apparently will coach again next Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles – but only after giving up the cherished playcalling part of his duties at the request of executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato, who met with the coach Sunday evening with the blessing of owner Dan Snyder.
The Redskins infamously haven’t scored 30 points in any of Zorn’s 22 games. Struggling so mightily against the likes of the Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers will earn a coach a pink slip, whether that comes after a loss to the Eagles that drops the Redskins to 2-5 or at the end of a season that’s rapidly heading toward a train wreck of a finish.
One switch that happened Sunday, the halftime benching of quarterback Jason Campbell for Todd Collins, received a ringing endorsement from the crowd but produced only brief dividends with a 42-yard bomb to Santana Moss that set up a field goal, leaving a quandary at the position for the Philadelphia game.

Between them, DeAngelo Hall and Steve Smith have four Pro Bowl selections, four head-to-head matchups and some serious bad blood.
Hall, the Washington Redskins’ No. 1 cornerback, and Smith, the Carolina Panthers’ No. 1 receiver, will renew a relationship Sunday that’s more than mere acquaintance.
The 5-foot-9 Smith and the 5-10 Hall are both undersized for the NFL, helping fuel passions that sometimes boil over – as they did Sept. 23, 2007, at the Georgia Dome.
Hall, then with the Atlanta Falcons, was penalized 37 yards for interfering with Smith on a bomb, 15 for holding him on the next play and 15 more for taunting him three plays later to set up a game-tying touchdown in the third quarter. Carolina, which trailed 17-10 before Hall lost his composure, won 27-20 despite Smith catching just one pass for 6 yards.

If you have Clinton Portis on your fantasy football team, you’re probably feeling a little paranoid right now.
Portis, the Redskins, their coach and even league schedule makers all seem to be conspiring against you.
So far Portis has shuffled for a mere 61 yards a game with no TDs. His line isn’t blocking for him. His coach isn’t calling plays for him. And the schedule keeps serving up defensive patsies that make it hard to put him on your fantasy bench.
Even though he’s averaged 1,370 yards and 10 TDs the past two years, he’s been stumped against the lowly Rams and Lions the past two weeks. He’s been stuffed on fourth-and-goal in both games, and last week coach Jim Zorn for some reason gave him just four carries in the first half.
Normally, you’d bench a guy after three weeks of horrid play. Yet, thanks to the schedule, you’re stuck. It’s tough to sit him against the next three currently winless opponents: Tampa Bay (31st against the run), Carolina (29th) or Kansas City (19th).

In two games, Santana Moss, the Redskins’ top wide receiver, has caught five passes for 41 yards. Only once, during a 79-catch 2008, did Moss go through a two-week stretch in which he caught fewer balls.
“That’s something that the team got to deal with. I’m a player,” Moss said Thursday. “I’m going to want more. But what can I do about it? All I can do is just keep doing my job. Maybe they’ll see me one day. Y’all watch football. Y’all know what’s going on. I don’t have to sit here and tell you that I need something more. Teams are playing to me, so therefore, somebody else got to get open.”
That, of course, hasn’t happened with enough regularity yet. Second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly, who earned the starting spot opposite Moss during the preseason, has five catches for 47 yards, and Devin Thomas, also in his second year, doesn’t have a catch yet. The bulk of quarterback Jason Campbell’s throws have gone to tight end Chris Cooley (14 catches-151 yards) and slot receiver Antwaan Randle El (11 catches-137 yards).

On his 28th birthday, Clinton Portis was trying to be low-key. No big party this year. “I’m going to mind my business,” he said Tuesday as he walked off the Washington Redskins’ practice field. But at the mention of the name “Riggo,” Portis wasn’t about to bite his tongue.
Portis kept up his running feud with Hall of Fame running back John Riggins on Tuesday. Portis, who has a chance to overtake Riggins this year as the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, clearly is growing tired of being criticized by the legend he’s pursuing.
“I think he was a great running back, but, you know, think of who else was around him,” Portis said. “That was really not hard to be a great running back when you’ve got that talent all around you. I think they just had great teams, you know. I think everybody who played in that era as a running back is big around here.”

It was a familiar but unwelcome sight during the team portion of the Washington Redskins’ practice on Wednesday morning. Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, the receivers who produced forgettable rookie seasons in 2008, were together again watching from the sideline.
Their hamstring injuries are far from major. In fact, Thomas and Kelly, who took part in individual drills before resting, each expect to return Thursday. But it’s more who’s hurt than the seriousness of the ailments that concerns coach Jim Zorn.

Every time something is written about Byron Westbrook, there is usually a mention that he is the brother of Brian Westbrook.
For example, when the Redskins play the Philadelphia Eagles, Byron usually becomes a focus that week because he mimics Brian–a Pro Bowl running back for the Eagles–on the scout team during practice. Two years in that role, two years on the Redskins’ practice squad, and now Byron knows he must establish himself in the NFL, apart from his brother.
