The Ravens traded the 25th pick of the first round Thursday to the Denver Broncos, who selected Florida quarterback Tim Tebow. In return for the 25th pick, the Ravens received picks from Denver in the second, third and fourth rounds of the draft.

I think I expected Baltimore to take Williams once he dropped to the Ravens’ pick at 25. The Ravens loved him. I thought it was incredible value if they’d have gotten him at 25. But at the end of the day, it’s hard to pay big money to both Haloti Ngata and — potentially — Williams if he pans out. Here’s where the story gets interesting. Baltimore paid a low three to acquire Anquan Boldin. To trade down 18 spots to a lesser-money pick (25 to 43), the Ravens acquired a high three. They viewed it as a no-brainer, and it’ll be a good choice unless all their players of choice for late in the first round are gone at 43.

Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed said Saturday that he’s “50-50″ on whether he will retire or return to the Baltimore Ravens for another NFL season.

Reed, 31, admits that Baltimore’s 20-3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts stings and that he doesn’t want to make an emotional decision. But after dealing with a serious neck injury for the past few seasons, Reed said that retirement is an option.

“It’s 50-50,” Reed said. “I got great doctors that I deal with. So I’m going to re-evaluate things and see how it goes. … At the end of the day, it’s my decision to play with injuries going forward for my career.”

Ravens No. 1 receiver Derrick Mason also said Saturday night that he’s undecided on his playing future.

Mason, 36, completed the final year of his contract with Baltimore and will become a free agent in March.

The Bengals can trot four talented receivers out on the field, and each of them is capable of a big play, something that will test the Ravens’ depth.

“They have four wide receivers,” said cornerback Frank Walker, who was inactive for the Broncos game. “All of them are notables, and they can all hurt you. And they take pride in it. It’s not just a bunch of quiet receivers. They’re confident. They’re talking and walking.”

The Ravens’ next assignment — stopping Adrian Peterson of the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings — appears to be more dangerous than fun. If the Ravens don’t fix what went wrong in last week’s 17-14 loss to Cincinnati, they won’t be starting a new streak but rather will extend to two their run of permitting a 100-yard rusher.

“Adrian Peterson is just phenomenal,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “He’s hard to attack, he’s amazingly fast. You’ve got to be completely sound in your run defense, and you’ve got to play great team run defense. You’ve got to run to the ball, you’ve got to play great team run defense.”

Although they disagreed with three defensive penalties on the Bengals’ game-winning drive, the Ravens blamed themselves – not the officials – for losing their grip on first place in the AFC North.

The final, painful blow came when the Ravens let Cincinnati wide receiver Andre Caldwell run wide open for a 20-yard touchdown catch with 22 seconds left, capping one of the most excruciating defensive series in team history.

The Ravens were penalized twice for roughing the passer, each one helping set up a New England touchdown in the first half. The first went against lineman Haloti Ngata (for contact to the head), and the second went against linebacker Terrell Suggs (for contact to the knees).

The Patriots were credited with 10 quarterback hits and a pair of sacks, both by Mike Wright, who was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet blow on Flacco. Harbaugh said Flacco “got hit [six] different times hard, and there was one call.’’
